IN THE BELLY is an abolitionist journal and media project grounded in prisoner solidarity and radical resistance. We publish essays, letters, zines, and art that confront the prison-industrial complex from the inside out.

All Publications are free for incarcerated people.

IN THE BELLY was born out of ongoing correspondence with incarcerated folks and a shared urgency to create radical, abolitionist media rooted in prisoner solidarity. Drawing inspiration from George Jackson and generations of resistance from inside, we set out to publish a journal that wouldn’t just document the violence of the prison-industrial complex—but fight it.

In May 2020, we released Volume 1, a zine-style collection of letters, essays, and poems from incarcerated and formerly incarcerated writers. Since then, we’ve followed up with our volumes, ranging from celebrations of Black August to sharing critical submissions from folks arll around the country.

As of Spring 2025, IN THE BELLY has published three volumes, circulated over 1,000 copies inside, and worked with over 40 imprisoned contributors across more than 20 states. We’re now relaunching our site as a digital home for the journal, a growing abolitionist media archive, and a tool for mobilization.

Fundraiser: Jays Homecoming Fundraiser

Our friend Jay was released from jail two weeks ago. Jay has a special connection with In The Belly, having been a contributor to the publication since 2022, and our editor Safear’s cellie as well! Jay is a talented artist and tattoo artist who has been spending a lot of time with the In The Belly Family.

Unfortunately Jay is still facing open felony charges in a small town in Western Pennsylvania.

As we welcome Jay home, we are again confronted with the possibility of the State taking him from us again.

We are seeking to raise $10,000

We had a consultation with a top criminal defense attorney in that town. He believes he can beat Jay’s case.

Help us keep our friend home
